Bill and Gina DensmoreBASS 7/04/2000

I am hoping that maybe you can help us track down one of our Bass ancestors. We keep hitting a brick wall and no one seems to have the information that we are looking for. My husband Bill is from Milton originally. His family still lives there. The Bass ancestor is from his maternal side of the family. We are trying to find the parents of William Bass who was married to Ophelia Adeline Savell. Both he and Ophelia are buried in the Bass Cemetery in Milton. William Bass was born on 3/15/1827 in NC, and died in Milton on 5/26/1887. He and Ophelia were the parents of William Henry, Mary Emily, Ann Melissa (his line), Morton David and George Kierce. Any information that you can share with us would be most appreciated. Bill has an Aunt that has been trying to find this information for over 30 years with no luck at all. Thanks, Gina Densmore

From:"Jack D. Stevens"
Organization:Col, Army, Retired

I am looking for information on companies B and D of the 3rd Bn (later D and E of the 15th) as I am researching the Cobb boys from Santa Rosa Co who served in these units. Troopers named Cobb included Benjamin W. T.(I have his pension application), his brother Anderson J, cousins F.A. and S. T. Cobb. So far I have learned that the 3rd was assembled in March 1862 in Pensacola under Major Myer and was assigned out of Pollard, Alabama/Bluff Spring, FL area until 24 Sep 1863 when the 15th was formed from the 3rd, Murphy's AL Cav Bn, and 3 independant companies. I have found a one page "Official" report on the battle at Pine Barren Bridge and have quite a bit on the battle of Marianna. I am willing to exchange details. Regards, Jack Stevens, Springfield, VA

COCKCROFT, JAMES W. born 1837 Henry Co, AL, died after 1920 Santa Rosa Co. at Bagdad. He was 83 yrs. old in 1920 Census, had a wife Elizabeth at that time who was 74. He had a daughter who lived nearby, SORRELLS, Nancy age 57, born 1863. Nancy was married twice, first to a WHITERS who died abt. 1890-1893 there and Marshall SORRELLS, born 1848 AL and died before 1920 in Bagdad. WHITERS, William Henry born 1890 Milton was Nancy's son. I wonder what happened to him? He was in Milton according to 1917 WWI Draft Notice. He probably moved away from the area before 1920. COCKCROFT, James owned a grocery store in 1910 in Bagdad. COCKCROFT, James was a civil war vet and began pension in 1906.
I wondered if there would be any death information on them?

I am looking for information on the following residents of Chumuckla =area, Santa Rosa Co: William W. Ellis, b. 1814 Conecuh Co, AL; wife Matilda (?) Ard, daughter of Abigail Barrow and George Ard. I have no record of Matilda and have never seen her name in any documents. Pension records I have of Abigail Ard indicate that William was married to her daughter. In 1860 census with William are Susan, 26 (married a Sewell or Sorrell, no children, div. by 1910 census, where she is living with Richmond Ellis, grandson of Wm W); David C, 24; George W., 7; Calvin G., 5; William A., 5; Eliza Ann Abigail, 12 (m. B. J. Harris); Malvis G., 4; Lydia, 1; David R., 1, and Polly "Pink", b. 1867, was in a later census, and may be a child of Wm W. and 2nd wife, Harriet Davis Ard, widow of John Ard, son of Abigail and George, whom he married circa 1875, according to her widow's pension record. I have no further record of David C., George W., Calvin G.,Malvis G., Lydia, or Polly. He is also reputed to have a daughter named Ciddie Ann. William W. had a brother named Green who married Amanda Nobles. This family also lived in Chumuckla. A Thomas Ellis (see my Allen Family Bible Record submission on-line) named his children the same as some of Wm W.'s grandchildren through his son William A. and wife Eliza Ward (daughter of Sarah, daughter of David Ward and Mary Rutha Kirkland). David R. may be "Reuben" who married Lula Toler.
